structures: columns 17-18

THE QUARRY LANE SCHOOL: ms/hs engineering

Objective:

Using the knowledge that has been learned from the previous projects plus in-class experiments and lectures, design and develop an efficient column. Efficiency will be defined as the column’s maximum load over its physical weight.

Constraints:

Columns must be constructed from chipboard. Its maximum cross sectional geometry cannot exceed 3”x3” and its height must be 10”. The column will consist of multiple individual elements that must be engineered together. Elements cannot have area dimensions larger than 5.0 sq in. No more than 2 identical elements can be laminated together. Teams will only be provided with a single sheet of 12”x12” chipboard.
